BIO
HI, I'M JOSEPH ERNST.
With deep roots in southwest Colorado, a lifetime of creative experience, and plenty of hard knocks to learn from, I try to approach the world with big curiosity and little ego. There’s always more to learn, and always something to contribute.
My first memory is riding a tiny bicycle down a dirt path in Rifle, Colorado. The year was 1984 and my family was living on the Western Slope before moving east for the duration of my childhood, where I discovered a love for photography. My mountain memories stuck, and at 22 I headed west, bikes and cameras in tow. I eventually worked several years for USA Cycling as a mechanic on the World Cup MTB circuit - a great way to see the world and take photos! Somewhere around 2007, I created my first-ever video - at a bike race, naturally.
After moving to Durango in 2010, I started a successful bike shop and helped found an outdoor gear company. I kept up my lifelong camera hobby, incrementally creating and learning while the bike world commanded most of my time (and paid the bills).
In 2023, my wife Hannah and I moved out of state for a few years. Bike jobs weren’t a thing there, so I got serious about camera work and launched Freewheel Studios as an experiment. The business thrived! When we decided to come home to Durango in 2026, I knew I had to relaunch Freewheel Studios here. It’s all systems go for 2027.
When I’m not busy trying to make a living, I love spending time outside with my wife, daughter, and longtime canine buddy.
